Lessons on Bullying and Teasing from a Preschool Classroom
How can educators of young children help prevent teasing,
bullying and exclusion? How can they encourage children to find constructive
ways to deal with conflict and aggression when it does come up? This
presentation provides an overview of the current literature on the
hidden aggression that is typical of girls as well as the more direct
aggression of boys and gives practical examples of ways to help children
deal with these problems.

Dealing with Violent Fantasy Play in the Classroom
Our culture is full of images of violence and sex that are far too complex for young children to comprehend. At the same time, the play encouraged by these images makes adults uncomfortable. How can we encourage healthy play and help the children to arrive at rules and limits that will help them feel secure? This workshop will explore the ways young children make sense of violence in our culture and ways we can help them deal with it constructively.
Action Research in the Classroom
Teachers as Writers: What's Your Problem?
Action research is a way teachers can gather information
about their work in their classrooms. It can help teachers extend
their role to include critical reflection on their teaching.
One of the most difficult parts of this process can
be getting started - deciding on a problem to study and making a plan
that will not interfere with the primary commitment to teaching and
will not be too demanding of the teacher's time.
This workshop describes the process of finding a subject,
collecting data in the classroom, and writing it up for publication.
We will then discuss possible ideas for future study and how to get
started working on them.
